Greek sculptors loved to recreate the conflict of the gods from ancient legends through their art. The king in this chess set is a replica of the famous statue “Poseidon of Melos” (2nd century BC), and the queen represents the famous “Athena Promachos” (450 BC, Acropolis Museum). A bronze Hellenistic statue inspired the officer, and the horse is part of the marble facade of the Parthenon, sculpted by Phaedius. The rook is a reproduction of one of the most admirable Attic stelae, dedicated to the young Aris who died in battle. The pawn is a bronze statue of a fully armed warrior from 500 BC.
