Precious materials such as elm and walnut wood, semi-precious stones such as onyx, Carrara marble and malachite have been carefully selected to create Italfama chessboards, while the chess pieces are crafted using many metals including solid brass and bronze, in various finishes that range from classic satin to refined gold and silver. The board with its magnificent dark blue and gold squares forms the lid of the box and has an exquisite printed frame also in gold. The board is finished with woven stitching along the entire edge, creating a unique effect and also providing good protection for your board. On the reverse side there is a screen-printed backgammon playing area in light brown.

The base of the box has an insert with compartments covered in suede to protect the chess pieces. There are also 15 white and 15 black checkers that can be used for Checkers on the chess side and backgammon on the reverse. The box also includes a set of dice for the board (2 black, 2 white and 1 white doubling dice). The pieces of this chess set depict Napoleon Bonaparte, his wife Josephine and other key elements of his French army.
